Hello Again!

Hi! It’s been a while.

I know that no one actually reads this stuff so no one knows that I haven’t posted anything to this blog in months, but still. I thought this would be a good spot to get my ideas down and rant to myself about things, hoping that maybe someone will read it.

Now, I haven’t uploaded to this blog in a while because… I kind of forgot about it, honestly. I got pretty busy in early December with finishing up the school year and everything. Then there was Christmas and New Year’s and I got my NCEA results back (which is just my end of year results here in NZ) in January. And now there’s this whole Coronavirus thing going on and I’m stuck in my house for God knows how long.

So, out of boredom I’ve been trying to write more and read more and… do anything really to keep myself busy. And today I remembered that I started this blog. So I went and found it again and re-read my previous posts that I did. I forgot about doing the whole book recommendation and everything.

Now I’m back again. So hi. I’m a writer.

Even though no one consistently reads this blog, I’ll give a little update on what’s been happening with my writing. In one of my last posts, I said that I was a little under 100,000 words in a story I’ve been working on. That same story now has about 135,000 words and counting. I have also started writing a sequel about the main love interest’s family. The main love interest in my story is one of six kids, and his siblings are a major part of the story. So, I thought I’d make a little mini-series type thing as a sequel, writing about each of their love lives.

I’ve also started a brand new short story only about a week ago. I know, I know, I really need to stop this. But my reasoning here is that a short story doesn’t take up too much time and I can write little pieces whenever. Each chapter is only a few hundred words and I’m already about halfway through the story in under a week.

The idea popped into my mind and I just couldn’t seem to leave it at just writing it down. In the middle of the night it came to me and I jotted it down in the notes on my phone, as I usually do. But then I came up with a certain scene that I wanted to happen so I wrote it down. Then their names came to me and the words just kept flowing. Now I’m knee deep in a cutesy, lovey romantic short story while simultaneously trying to finish the major novel that I’ve been working on for two years.

Now, I thought since I’ve been away I’ll make a major list of book recommendations. Once again, they’re all from Wattpad. I tried to narrow them down to ones I’ve found more recently.

Togetherness by writerscrafts
This book is so good! I have read it about four or five times now and every time I love it a little more. I love this story so much and it is a must read.

Game Changer by ray_xo
Wow. I read this quite recently and it had me hooked. It is so damn good. It’s quite a long story, but the writing is really good. It’s amazing.

A Thousand Words by treblehearts
I have read this book so many times now and I cry every time. This book is amazing. The chemistry between the two main characters is unbelievable. The writing is amazing as well. You have to read this book.

A few of the books that I have read more recently are still incomplete, but I’ll add a couple of them as well because I am hooked. I don’t usually read books if they are incomplete because I like to read them in one or a few sittings, but I just couldn’t help myself when it came to these.

Lilah by AshylnMontgomery
This book is so incredibly well written. The main character is so weird and wonderful and I wonder sometimes how the author comes up with half of the things the character says. It is such a great read and I can’t wait for it to be finished.

Androphobia by Fudgecakexox
This story is so good. It is an age gap love story, but the age gap isn’t too extreme. It’s honestly a great book and the writing is incredible.

Also, I need to once again recommend the Fighter’s Den series by TheFeveredBookaholic. Last time I recommended these, three were complete, one was ongoing and another was in the works. Now, The first four are finished and I have read and loved them all while the author is about a third of the way through the last book in the series. And can I just say, this last book has to be my favourite book of all time. While reading the third book, I thought nothing could beat that. Then the fourth book came along and I was seriously doubting that the author could pull off making the fifth and final book better than the rest. But she did and I am so happy about it. The way the author writes is so amazing and the character development- the character development. It’s amazing. Everything about her books is amazing. I’m actually planning on going back to re-read the entire series once the last book is completed. The books are amazing. I would recommend them a thousand times over. Incredible.

An Endless Amount Of Ideas

I have a problem. A serious problem.

I keep coming up with new story ideas.

I know, this doesn’t really seem like a problem, but it is. Because, right now, I have at least fourteen different story ideas. And that’s not including the two stories I have finished.

Each of the fourteen stories are all at different stages. For example, I have one story that I have been working on for almost two years now and it currently consists of 98,017 words. Then there are others which I’ve only briefly planned out so far.

That’s not necessarily the problem. The problem is, even with this amount of story ideas, I am still coming up with more and more ideas that I am just itching to plan out.

I think my imagination is just too big. A lot of the time, I just prefer to sit, listening to my music and imagining all these stories. I adore long car rides for this very reason. I get to sit and think for hours on end. But this is the reason I have so many stories on the go at once.

But this causes issues, when I’m halfway through writing a book, and suddenly I lose interest because of other ideas I’m having. So I will take a break from writing the book I have already spent so much time on and instead start planning out a new book. Then I get so caught up in that one, forgetting about the previous story. And the process just continues to repeat itself as I come up with more and more ideas.

Now. How do I fix this…?

I guess I don’t. Because it’s not always a bad thing. If I didn’t keep planning multiple different books, I wouldn’t be almost 100,000 words into a story that I am so unbelievably proud of. If I had just focused on the ideas I already had, I wouldn’t have three other series’ all planned out and ready to write.

I just need to stop after the planning stage and continue with my old works as well, instead of just abandoning them like I’ve done in the past. If I keep a good balance, then nothing should go wrong.

Hopefully.

Now, time for my book recommendation!!!

This book is once again from Wattpad and it is called Dusk.
Link: https://www.wattpad.com/story/88175699-d-u-s-k-%E2%9C%94

This book is written beautifully. It’s a slow burn romance and when I say slow, I mean slow. But that’s what I love about it. It has you rooting for the characters to get together and sitting on the edge of your seat with every conversation they have, just waiting for some sort of development. It’s honestly amazing and you must check it out!!

One must be a little crazy to write a good novel.

Writer’s Block

Do I believe that writer’s block is real? Yes and No.

Yes, to a point. I often get stuck in some places that I really don’t need to get stuck on. Like right now, I am stuck in the middle of writing a scene that should be really simple to finish, but I just can’t seem to get the words on the page.

But also no. Because it is all in our heads. Literally everything that we have written, all the characters, places and relationships have all been created in our minds. So there is really no reason to get stuck. We just have to sit back and think What would my character do? Because we have created these characters from scratch and no one knows them better than we do. I really do believe that as I write, I am breaking pieces of myself apart and morphing them into characters. So if this is the case, the characters are me and I have no reason to be blocked at all.

Writer’s block is all in our head, just like all our writing once was.

Despite this, I still get stuck. All the time. I try and I try to put myself into the right head space to write, but I just can’t seem to get the words down on the page.

Honestly, I find that I write best when I’m supposed to be doing something else. When there is something that I need to be doing and I’m procrastinating by writing, I really do produce some of my best work. I don’t know why that is, but I guess I really need to procrastinate more.

Yeah, okay, maybe not…

Anyway, time for my book recommendation!!!

How to Punch Soren McKinin

This book is absolutely gorgeous. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve read it. It’s sad and it’ll probably make you cry, but honestly you have to read it. There are also three other books in the series, but I have yet to read them. Seriously go check it out! It’s an amazing book.

If I waited for perfection, I would never write.

Character Aesthetics

Ahhh… Character aesthetics. One of my favorite parts of uploading stories to Wattpad. I love creating aesthetics for my characters because it really shows who the character is as a person. Aesthetics can tell you a lot. Like what their likes and dislikes are, whether they are wealthy or not, if they’re sarcastic and witty or very serious. I really do just love making them.

I thought I’d make a post about this just to share my opinion. Maybe people don’t like aesthetics in stories on Wattpad… But I really do love them.

See that collage up there ^^^ Yeah, I made that purely for this blog. It has no purpose. But it was so fun to make! I love finding images with similar color schemes or filters and putting them together like this.

I always find making aesthetics for my characters quite helpful, actually. Whenever I come up with a new character, one of the first things I do is make an aesthetic for them. I find this helpful because I’ll look for certain images with a vague idea of a character in mind, and then the character slowly comes to life as I put more and more images together.

That’s all I really have to say about that… Time for my next book recommendation!

Yes, this one is also from Wattpad, and I really hope you give it a try!

This book is called I Fight For Her and here’s the link: https://www.wattpad.com/story/143647068-i-fight-for-her

This book is amazing and beautiful and I can’t give it enough praise. It is hands down one of my favorite books. I have read it three times now and I honestly wouldn’t mind reading it a fourth time again. Please give it a read!!!

Maybe it won’t be famous.
Maybe it won’t be a movie.
But that’s not why I started it.
And that’s not why I’ll finish.

How Does Marvel Do It?

I ask myself this question almost every time I sit down to write.

If you’re a Marvel fan, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

I don’t know how they manage to weave their characters backstories and the movie plots together so seamlessly, but I want them to teach me. I have a few different series’ in the works at the moment, but I find it so hard to make the different characters and different stories link. Marvel manages to do it so beautifully. I love it when you’re watching one of their movies and you get that ‘oooh’ moment, when something clicks into place.

*Spoilers* If you haven’t watched Civil War, don’t read this next part.

Those moments are – to me – what make those movies so amazing. Well, it’s one of the reasons. Like when they find out Bucky was the one who killed Tony’s parents. That fact just slid into the plot so perfectly, like this:

It just seemed so perfect and it made sense.

That’s how I want my books to be. I want readers to have that ‘oooh’ moment that I love so much. That’s always my goal, but it’s a lot harder than it seems. I always find it hard to drop hints or keep things hidden from the reader. I always just want to give them all the information at once. But I’ve found it’s more satisfying to drop hints and just gives small pieces of information before a big reveal. Then things start to make sense and the reader just wants to keep reading more.

That’s my theory anyway.

Tell me if you guys get what I mean? I hope I’m not the only one…

My book recommendation: Life in Color, Life in Search and Life in Love
Here’s the link to the first book: https://www.wattpad.com/story/142077764-life-in-color-%E2%9C%94%EF%B8%8F

Again, this one’s from Wattpad. But this series is honestly amazing. I don’t even have the words to describe how well written these books are. Two of the three are completed while the other is ongoing, but the author uploads once a week. Honestly, this series is incredible.

The first draft is just you telling yourself the story.

Creating A Story

It might just be me, but I always find it hard to plot out a full story before I actually start writing. Like, I come up with the characters and a general idea of the direction I want the story to go in… then I just start writing. But I want to stop that. Because my last two books, Reasons to Hate You and Reasons to Love You have so many plot holes and it’s because I planned none of it.

Now, I always do some planning before I just start writing. I’ll come up with the characters names and their backstories, fleshing out their personalities and everything. And I decide what the point of the story is and so on. But then I start planning out a general idea of the events that need to occur in the story, and I get so excited about it and I have so many ideas, so I just start writing. And then I write between five to ten chapters, and I’m so proud of it, that I just decided to upload it to Wattpad straight away.

This is a huge mistake.

Because then I get stuck in the middle of the story and I never know where to go from there. Meanwhile, I have a half-finished story uploaded that people are reading and wanting more of. But I can’t upload any more chapters, because I can’t continue the story.

I find myself stuck with a story that has a million sub-plots, way too many pointless characters and a whole bunch of terrible dialogue. Then I realize that many of my characters have similar personalities or some of them don’t really fit with the story. It’s all just a big mess.

Then when I don’t upload for a while, I feel like I am letting people down, even though practically no one reads my work.

But I put more pressure on myself to write, but then it seems like everything I write is garbage. So I look through the previous chapters, and I realize I hate all of it, and I just want to rewrite the whole thing.

Which is what I have started to do with Reasons to Hate You and Reasons to Love You. I realize now that it was a mistake to just upload a chapter as soon as I’ve written it. Because a month later, I’ll re-read it and see about a million mistakes.

With this in mind, I have started planning out my stories a little more. I take a little more time in finding the right words and thinking out my sentences a bit better. And so far, I have found that my writing has improved immensely.

But I definitely still have a long way to go.

I know this entire post was a bit of a rant, but I just needed to express what I was feeling in one way or another.

Now, I have decided that at the end of each blog post, I will recommend a few books to read. Most of them will probably be from Wattpad, so I apologize if you don’t read on that site, but I really do think you should give them a try.

So, for my first suggestion, I recommend you read the Fighters Den series. There are three completed books in the series so far, and the fourth is updated two or three times a week. There is also a fifth book to come, which I am unbelievably excited for!

I cannot praise this book it enough. The writer is absolutely amazing. They are so good at developing their characters and she writes them with such chemistry. They feel so real.

The story is 17+ and in the romance genre.

If you want to give it a try, here’s the link to the first book in the series: https://www.wattpad.com/story/75238709-path-to-redemption-fighter%27s-den-1

They are honestly so amazing, and I’m sure the author would love the support!

Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.

My First Post

Hello! I know no one will probably ever come across this site and actually take the time to read my posts, but I thought I might give it a shot anyway. I just want to use this site to share my story ideas and maybe even get feedback on pieces of my writing. I upload stories to Wattpad, but I sometimes doubt myself when it comes to my writing. So, I thought I might as well express my concerns here. Even though nobody will probably ever reply.

Anyway, how about I share a little about myself?

I’m from Auckland, New Zealand. Not many people seem to know where that is, so…

Yeah, we’re pretty small and far away from everything else. Anyway, I live in Auckland which is near the top of New Zealand. I don’t know if you really care, but I thought I’d show you….

Okay, what else…? Oh! I have a dog! She’s a cross between a Silky Jack (which is a Jack Russell crossed with an Australian Silky) and a Maltese. She’s absolutely adorable and I love her to pieces!

What else is there to say? I’m a pretty boring person, really, but I have a huge love for writing! So far, I have published one novel on Wattpad and I am in the process of writing a sequel. I have published a short story on Wattpad as well!

Here’s a link to my page if you want to check them out: https://www.wattpad.com/user/_pink_flamingo_09_

Well… I think that’s all I have to say for now! I hope that maybe other writers can read my blog and relate to my struggles or maybe find comfort in the fact that they’re not alone. Or even if you don’t write, maybe this blog could give you an insight into the process of writing a novel. Maybe you could even be inspired to give writing a go yourself!

If you actually read any of that… Thank you. It means a lot that someone actually took the time to read my ranting. Even if it is pointless, it’s nice to know someone out there understands. That they care enough to listen.
